News Minutes of Main Committee Meeting (11 September 2001) Accessibility Specification for Small Buses Designed to Carry 9 to 22 Passengers (Inclusive) DPTAC to investigate accessibility education and training The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee's (DPTAC) new website provides comprehensive information on its role in advising the Government on the transport needs of disabled people. The website provides an overview of what DPTAC does and the activities of its working groups. It focuses primarily on different transport modes, including air travel, buses, ferries, motoring, rail, taxis and walking and includes a new section on the built environment, where DPTAC also advises the Government. Welcoming the launch of the website, Chair of DPTAC, Jane Wilmot OBE said: "Disabled people are not a minority - there are 8.5 million of us. Transport is fundamental to independent mobility. For disabled people to have a better quality of life we need to be able to travel independently and to be able to get into and use buildings easily. The clear message from the work of DPTAC is that central and local government and service providers, working together and with disabled people, can produce better and more effective transport systems and accessible buildings - often improving access for everyone." "The website will help people to get a better understanding of what DPTAC does. More importantly it will help to explain what disabled people need from transport services and facilities. I am sure it will prove a useful guide for local authorities and transport operators in developing safe, affordable, accessible and available transport systems which meet those needs." "This is an exciting time in accessibility for disabled people with prospects of real change coming soon. The Government has made a commitment that accessibility for disabled people will be a condition of public money being spent on transport projects. Guidelines and standards on access to buildings and transport vehicles have been, or are in the process of being developed. The DPTAC website should help make that information more accessible and available to everyone" DPTAC want the website to be a resource for everyone from disabled people to those aiming to provide services that meet everyone's needs. It will evolve with the work of the Committee, but DPTAC would welcome your advice on the information you want to receive. Information about the rights of disabled people to accessible transport systems and infrastructure particularly under the DDA as well as more information on how to make comments and how to complain to transport operators will come soon. |
